According to a report by China News Service, hydrogen energy is gradually becoming one of the key drivers of the global energy transition. A recently released report suggests that, influenced by multiple favorable factors—including policy support and corporate participation—the hydrogen energy industry will exhibit several distinct trends.

The report suggests that hydrogen energy is poised to achieve commercialization first in the transportation sector. Meanwhile, green hydrogen production, key materials for hydrogen fuel cells, and the localization of hydrogen refueling station equipment will become hot growth areas in the hydrogen energy industry. In addition, regional industrial layouts for hydrogen energy are likely to take shape rapidly.

“Research on the Green Hydrogen Industry and Future Development Trends” was released by KPMG. “As an efficient, low-carbon energy carrier and a green, clean industrial feedstock, hydrogen has abundant application scenarios across multiple sectors including transportation, industry, construction, and power generation,” said Tao Kuangchun, Chairman of KPMG China and the Asia-Pacific region. He added that, with governments continuously introducing supportive policies, hydrogen energy is poised for accelerated development.

Citing data from the report, according to forecasts by major international energy agencies, hydrogen production is expected to reach between 500 million and 800 million tons by 2050, with virtually all of this production consisting of clean hydrogen types represented by “blue hydrogen” and “green hydrogen.” Additionally, according to estimates by the China Hydrogen Energy Industry Alliance, during China’s carbon peak period by 2030, the country’s annual demand for hydrogen will reach approximately 40 million tons.

The report further points out that the hydrogen energy industry chain mainly comprises three segments: upstream hydrogen production, midstream hydrogen storage, transportation, and refueling stations, and downstream diversified application scenarios. Among these, high-pressure gaseous hydrogen storage and cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage have already entered the commercial application stage, while organic liquid hydrogen storage and solid-material hydrogen storage are still in the research and development phase.

The report indicates that currently, the primary application areas for hydrogen energy are concentrated in sectors such as transportation, industry, power generation, and buildings. Among these, transportation and industry are the main application areas, while applications in buildings, power generation, and heating remain at the exploratory stage.
